Halloween has become a huge holiday. When I was a kid, it was all about homemade costumes and one night of trick-or-treating.

Today, Halloween is a full-fledged season for some families. Soon as September rolls around, people begin to plan for the holiday. Or should I say season?

We have four eerieHalloween decoration ideas for your porch here.

Create a bat haven on your porch. From stiffened black felt, cut out many black bats. Try various sizes. Use a template you get online. Then using masking tape or duct tape on the back, tape the bats to the walls of your porch. Tape some to your windows and porch railings, too. Some of the bats could hang down from the ceiling using black thread. You will have an eerie porch that will be noticed for sure! Create a spider covered porch. Scary Halloween decorations are as easy as finding some super-sized spiders at your craft store or home improvement store. The bigger the better. You might even be able to find glow-in-the-dark spiders. Ewwww! While you're at it, pick up a package or two of that fake spider web material. Stretch it in the corners of your porch to create bigger-than-life spider webs. Hang the spiders from the ceiling, the porch columns, and the walls - anywhere you want many-legged creatures. Rent a fog machine and play some creepy music. Who knows what lurks in the fog? Perhaps nothing but your trick-or-treaters will not know for sure. Playing eerie music combined with the rolling fog will create an aura of suspense and mystery. Make a crypt look like it has been opened and strategically place a Mummy on your porch, making it look like he has risen from the dead! How about hanging a couple skeletons freely from the ceiling and clothe them in a black jacket and hat? That will scare the munchkins some! Of course, play some of that eerie creepy music and imaginations will go like crazy. Include some jack-o-lanterns around the porch with electric lights.

Your porch, whether large or small, can be a very fun place to decorate for the munchkins that come knocking at your door for treats. Or is it tricks that you generously give? No matter how scary your porch is, be nice to the kids who come by! Use your imagination to create something special that they will remember for a long time.

Haunted porch anybody?

Halloween marks one of the most exciting days in the yearly calendar, not least because children can fulfill their fantasies of living in a spooky house, dressing up in spookier costumes and go around trying to frighten friends and neighbors. It also gives the perfect excuse to unleash all your latent talents to transform your house into a truly haunted and scary place and you need not spend a fortune on all those Halloween decorations. Homemade Halloween decoration works out as nice as store-bought ones and of course, costs much less.

Making your own decorations will not only keep the budget in check but will also give that personalized touch which no readymade stuff can impart. Also, it's a great way to involve the entire family and children especially will love helping out with the decorations.

To scare all those 'trick or treat' troopers, what better way than to hang a frightening looking scarecrow on a tree in the yard? Simply take an old pair of jeans and a shirt and stuff them with hay or leaves. Next, draw an evil face on any old piece of burlap and hang your scarecrow on a tree with the help of a rope and watch your guests scamper away in fright!

Create an eerie atmosphere in the house by hanging pillow-cases ghosts across the rooms. Plain white pillowcases and wire hangers are all that is required. By cutting a small hole in the top, closed part of the pillow case and sliding the hanger from the bottom, you can put the hook through the hole and gently pull down the hanger in a diamond shape. Then, with a twist tie, tie up the bottom of the pillow case and sketch a ghastly face on it with a black marker and voila! Your hanging ghosts are ready to spook your visitors.

If you love the idea of your visitors screaming in fright as bats swoop down on them, cut up bat shapes out of black garbage bags and hang it on the ceiling or doorways with the help of a twist tie and let the banshee yells start!

Raid your grandma's or mom's thread supply for quilt batting and use it to create a spidery effect around the house and yard. By adding a few plastic spiders and skeletons, your house will look haunted enough to scare even you!

Pumpkin carving is an age-old Halloween tradition and the entire family can get involved in carving out the spookiest faces. Small pumpkins are ideal for carving traditional faces and lots of them can be scattered throughout the house. If you just want a centerpiece, a very large pumpkin will work well for elaborate designs and this can be placed on the porch or on the table. The dark Halloween night is traditionally lit up by Jack-O- Lanterns and carved out pumpkins can be used to put candles inside.

For homemade Halloween decoration, just give rein to your imagination and perhaps, you will surprise yourself with your own creativity!

How to Make A Spooky Halloween Cake

How to Make A Spooky Halloween Cake

Halloween is the best time of year to pull out all the stops when it comes to cake decorating. Put on your creative cap and have fun with designs, colors and themes.

I love to make spooky and rather gory cakes for Halloween. The scarier the better in my eyes! You can make a cute and beautiful cake any day of the week but it's not every day that you can make a gooey brain cake with eyeballs popping out the side!

First things first, get some ideas rolling. How many people does your cake have to feed is a good one to start at. This will decide on how big you can go.

I always like to take a trip to my local grocery store and buy all the scariest Halloween candies I can find. There's always gummy worms, chocolate eyeballs, body parts, spiders, glow in the dark skeletons, the list goes on!

While you're there pick up a jar of red jelly or raspberry jam, this will come in handy for any edible blood you'll be needing. Also think of marshmallows, sprinkles and pretzel sticks. These always make great props and cupcake toppers. Now that you've got all your goodies in hand you can start making your spooky Halloween cake.

I think the most popular colors for Halloween are of course orange and black, deep purple and reds as well as browns and yellows. Stay away from any cheery pastel colors! You can always bring these colors out for Easter.

Do you want to make a sheet cake, a tiered cake or a 3D shaped cake? Here are some sheet cake ideas: Frankenstein and his wife, haunted house, pumpkin patch, ghosts and goblins. Here are some tiered cake ideas: Haunted graveyard with road going up, haunted house on top of hill, trick or treating, Here are some 3D cake ideas: Scary pumpkins, spooky skeletons, Frankenstein's head, hand coming out of grave and of course beattlejuice.

If you know how to make cake pops there's some really great tutorials on how to make some really scary Halloween cake pops.

Remember when you're creating your scary Halloween Cake to go all out! Use whatever you can to make it spooky and spectacular. Use candies, jellies, gummy candies, chocolate and any other toppers you can find. Get creative with colors and textures by using household items you already have in your cupboard, and most of all just have fun with it!

Cool Halloween Costume Ideas For Teachers

ItemTitle

Many schools incorporate special activities into the curriculum around the end of October to have fun with Halloween. Whether hallway costume parade, fall festival, or Halloween party, teachers should get in on the costume fun along with their students. But, sometimes coming up with a great costume idea that fits a teacher's budget, will be a hit with the students and won't interfere with working through the day can be a big challenge. Here are some cool Halloween costume ideas for teachers that score an A+.

Storybook Characters: A good portion of school is devoted to reading, so why not incorporate a book into your Halloween costume? Come dressed as a current day popular or long-time favorite storybook character and watch the children's faces light up in glee. Younger elementary children will love to see you dressed up as a character that's helping them learn to read such as the Cat and the Hat or one of the many beloved fairytale characters. Older kids will appreciate seeing you as a character from other favorite books such as Junie B. Jones, Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus or a professor from Harry Potter such as Dumbledore. Snape or Hagrid. In high school, bring literary legends, such as Shakespeare, to life by dressing up as a timeless character from one of the classics.

Science Stuff: Science class always makes a great venue for Halloween teacher costumes. Dress up as a mad scientist with wild hair and a lab coat, a planet from the solar system, a giant frog labeled for dissection or a life-sized skeleton. If you are really creative, a unique teacher costume for science class is to dress as a strand of DNA. Wear a black sweat suit that you have attached with a helix of DNA made from colorful pipe cleaners and fuzzy pom-poms.

Role Swapping: Turning the tables from teacher to student is always a fun joke. You can come dressed as the head cheerleader, football player, loveable computer nerd, or any other appropriate clique at your school. The kids will get a kick out of seeing you make a fool out of yourself and these costumes are easy to put together from your school's spirit shop or an online costume shop.

Remember that teacher costumes should always uphold the standards of being a role model for the children. Follow the rules and conduct for dressing that is expected by the school and never wear anything inappropriate. For example, sexy costumes or especially gory and scary costumes would not be appropriate for teacher costumes. A good rule of thumb is that if you have any question at all about the outfit's appropriateness, even the slightest of concerns, it is best left at home. Instead, opt for a Halloween costume that would be rated G by everyone.
